The Right Plaster Mix Ratio: A Key to Strong and Smooth Walls
Plaster is more than just a finishing layer—it protects walls, improves durability, and creates a smooth surface for painting. However, the quality of plaster depends greatly on using the correct mixture ratio.
For internal walls, a 1:4 cement-to-sand ratio (1 part cement and 4 parts clean sand) is commonly recommended. This provides a strong, smooth finish suitable for most residential buildings. For external walls, where weather resistance is more important, a 1:3 ratio is often preferred to improve strength and durability.
Using clean, well-graded sand and fresh cement is essential. The water should be added gradually to achieve a workable consistency without making the mix too wet. Excess water weakens the plaster and can lead to cracks, while too little water makes application difficult.
Before plastering, the wall surface should be cleaned and lightly dampened. Proper curing for at least 7 days helps the plaster gain maximum strength and reduces the chances of shrinkage cracks.
